New York Times May Suffer If Murdoch Attacks


The Times company relies more heavily on revenue from its flagship newspaper than does Gannett Co. on its core national newspaper, USA Today, the column said. Dow Jones & Co. shareholders vote today on Murdoch's $5.2 billion purchase.

New York City-based News Corp. can afford to lower profit margins on the Journal because it's a worldwide company with broadcast and Internet operations as well as other newspapers, the FT said.

Still, the Times' approach to news is so different from the Journal's that Murdoch may not find luring readers so easy, the column said.
